Commercial production of maltitol uses the starch of grains like corn, wheat, and potatoes. It is 90% sweeter and has half the calories of sugar. Maltitol is a new functional sweetener; it has the advantages of being low calorie, non-caries, difficult digestion, promoting calcium absorption, etc. The usage of gum sweetened with maltitol is thought to improve oral health by increasing saliva production and reducing oral harmful germs. Like sugar and other sweeteners, maltitol and other sugar alcohols do not result in tooth damage or cavities.
Maltitol is a good low-energy sweetener, usually added to make sugar-free chewing gum. When compared to gum base, sugar-free CG sweetened with maltitol or xylitol can also lessen plaque acidogenicity because there are fewer oral germs present. ADA Council on Scientific Affair accepts that Chewing sugar-free Chewing gum for 20 minutes after a meal increases saliva production, which lowers acid levels and strengthens teeth against decay.
The benefits of Using Maltitol in Gum Base:
- When teeth are chewed for 20 minutes after eating, it prevents cavities.
- Long-lasting flavor
- Can be combined into multiple flavors.
Effects of maltitol-sweetened sugar-free chewing gum on the emergence of gingivitis and plaque:
There is consistent evidence to support the use of sugar-free chewing gum as part of routine oral hygiene to prevent dental caries, and it appears to have a caries-reducing effect when used just after meals. The stimulation of salivary glands while chewing, the absence of sucrose, and the inability of bacteria to convert polyols into acids are all possible explanations for the observed caries reduction. A recent systematic analysis on the effectiveness of sugar-free chewing gum for plaque and gingivitis came to the conclusion that using it as a supplement to brushing your teeth results in a modest but substantial decrease in plaque scores. As an addition to brushing your teeth, eating sugar-free gum five times a day for 10 minutes decreased the plaque score, according to a prior systematic study by Keukenmeester et al. Not only dental health condition, according to Rosenhek et al., chewing sweetened gum also caused the group to lose weight quickly.
